Every semester at McDaniel College, various Greek organizations hold events to raise money for a wide range of reasons. While some are held to benefit the individual chapters here on campus, many of these events collect money to benefit various causes and foundations such as St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the National Kidney Foundation, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and many more.
Recently, the Maryland Beta chapter of Phi Delta Theta here at McDaniel has been organizing a 5K run that will take place on campus, and the money raised will be donated to the ALS Foundation. The date of the event will be Sunday, April 15th and will begin at 9:30 am. Tickets are $1 a person, or $20 for a five-person team.
ALS stands for “amyotrophic lateral sclerosis” and is more popularly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. This foundation raises funds for research into treatments for the disease, and has hundreds of chapters installed throughout the country.
The National headquarters of Phi Delta Theta (located in Oxford, Ohio) identifies the ALS Foundation as the organization to which all of their chapters devote their philanthropy. Every year, various chapters come up with new ways in which they raise money for this cause.
To sign up, those interested may log onto http://web.alsa.org/site/TR?team_id=217583&fr_id=7530&pg=team to complete the registration process. An additional option to register is to come to the event’s final registration from 8:00am to 9:30am on the day of the race.
Those who place first, second, and third will receive rewards provided by local businesses to reward their effort and to thank them for their support of the ALS Foundation.
Two members of Phi Delta Theta have been tackling the issues of organization and preparation of the race. Jake Butler (junior) and Zachary LaVeck (sophomore) have been planning this event for months, with the help of Amy Robinson, the Special Events and Workplace Giving Coordinator for the DC/MD/VA Chapter of the ALS Foundation.
