Green Terror Baseball took to the diamond this weekend to face off against the Penn State-York Nittany Lions in doubleheader non-conference action on Saturday. McDaniel took the first game 8-1, following with a 14-2 rout in the second.
McDaniel (17-1) was led on the offensive side by leadoff hitter Sean Sivo, who went a combined 4-for-6 with two RBI’s and three walks. Three-hole Cameron Bahr added another three RBI’s on 2-for-7 hitting. Eric Grantland, batting sixth, hit 3-for-7 while scoring three runs and driving in an additional two.
The Terror kept busy on the bases on Saturday. Sivo went 5-for-8 on stolen bases, Austin Fry 1-for-2, while Rosanova and Kaleb Reitz each went 1-for-1.
Penn St.-York (0-5) was led by shortstop Nicholas Schuler who drove in two and hit 2-for-6 combined.
In the first game, McDaniel led off the scoring in the bottom of the first when Bahr reached base on a fielder’s choice and was driven in by a Gilbert double to center field.
The score remained 1-0 until Penn State-York’s Schuler singled to right in the sixth inning, scoring Stein who had previously doubled, tying the game at 1-1.
The Terror went off in the bottom of the sixth, scoring seven, settling the score at 8-1. O’Shea led off the inning with a triple to center field. A Brad Hampton sacrifice fly to right scored O’Shea and McDaniel took the lead for good. McDaniel scored their final six runs with two outs in the inning.
Pitcher Zach Kronick (4-0) went the distance for McDaniel in the first game, allowing just four hits from 27 batters faced. Kronick struck out 16 and allowed just one earned run.
Kent Walker (0-1) took the loss on 5.1 innings pitched for the Lions, allowing three runs on seven hits and five walks, striking out just one.
Hunter Thomas finished the game for the Lions with .2 innings pitched, allowing five runs, one earned, on three hits and three walks.
McDaniel recorded 10 hits with no errors. Penn State-York managed just four hits with three errors.
The second game was a little more civilized at the start. The Lions started the scoring with an unearned run from Tyler Spencer in the top of the first. McDaniel responded when Bahr grounded out to short, scoring Windisch to tie it up.
After a stagnant top of the second, the Terror scored four in their half to take the lead 5-1, a lead that would remain for the rest of the game. Grantland led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Fry walked in the following at bat. An infield single from O’Shea left the bases loaded for Rosanova who reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Grantland for the lead. Three more runs came on as many hits before the inning was over.
Penn State-York got a run back in their half of the fifth, but the Terror responded with two more. Entering the sixth, the score stood 7-2.
McDaniel added seven more runs in the sixth and blew the game wide open with a final score of 14-2.
The Terror ended the game with 15 hits and just one error. The Lions accumulated six hits and two errors.
McDaniel’s Brad Thaxton (2-0) earned the win in game two, going five innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits and one walk while striking out seven.
Windisch came in to close the final two innings, striking out three.
The Terror sweep leaves them at 17-1 for the season, all non-conference games. Centennial Conference action will start on Saturday, April 2 with a doubleheader at Franklin & Marshall (8-11).
McDaniel will take the field for the next game at home on Wednesday, April 30 against Hood (7-10) at 3:30 p.m.
