OrgSync: McDaniel’s New Campus Connection

You have all probably seen the many signs around McDaniel, and received numerous campus emails telling you to register and create an account on OrgSync.  Unaware and uninterested in what the website does, you have probably neglected to do so. Needless to say, for those of you out there who have yet to visit the website, it is something you should put on your to-do list.

OrgSync is web-based software that is offered to institutions for them to create an online community for students to get informed, involved, and to interact with each other.

The set-up of the website is very similar to Facebook. When you login you are directed to a homepage filled with updates, news, and upcoming campus events. Students have the ability to create a profile, and join campus organizations they are a part of, or even join new ones.

Other features of the website include a campus calendar with every campus event listed, the opportunity for students to post poll questions, and finally, each student organization can create their own page for members only.

Lindsey Henderson, Assistant Director of the Office of Student Engagement (OSE) at McDaniel, said there would be different giveaways over the course of the semester, so it is important to check the site regularly.

The most recent giveaway was a Regal Cinemas movie ticket! Who doesn’t love a free movie?

OrgSync was founded by two University of Texas students in 2007. Henderson said that her favorite part about the company was that it was conceived and started by students.

Frustrated with the challenges of being student leaders, Eric Fortenberry and Cayce Stone decided to create this web-based software that would help bring solutions to the problems they faced.

The students hoped their company would expand to be able to help other college students facing similar problems. The company started small, but is continuing to grow due to avid marketing and hard work. Over 150 universities across the United States and Canada are now using OrgSync.

If you are concerned that creating an account will require too much time and effort, then don’t be because it is quick and easy. The steps are very simple.

First, go to http://www.orgsync.com. Click on “Register” in the top right corner. Then use your McDaniel College email address and password to login. Select complete account information and finish. The whole process takes about five minutes and is completely hassle free.

If you have trouble navigating the site, have questions about it, or want to learn more, there is an information session being held on Tuesday, February 21st from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Forum.

The OrgSync consultant working with McDaniel will be coming from Texas to inform faculty and students about all of the capabilities of the website.

Henderson said it would be a good idea for all students to come to the information session, as they will most likely learn about things they didn’t know. She stated that was the case for her as she is continually learning new things and features of OrgSync.

This is a great new media tool for students to be apart of. It is a place where students can get information, learn about all of the student organizations on campus and even join them while connecting with peers.

As of now, 300 students have registered for OrgSync. OSE’s ultimate goal is for every undergraduate to have an account and use the website regularly as a connection and information portal.
