McDaniel students, put down the booze and pick up a dictionary; it is time for a new weekend activity.
McDaniel College is hosting a countywide Scrabble tournament on Saturday, Feb. 19 from 1 p.m. until 5
p.m.
The McDaniel English Department, the Literacy Council of Carroll County, and the Westminster Rotary
Club will host “Scrabble Madness,” a charity Scrabble contest, in the Klitzberg Pavilion.
“Increasing literacy is a cause that is dear to the heart of every English major and teacher,” said Dr. Mary
Bendel-Simso, an organizer of the charity event.
Dr. Mary is very enthusiastic about Scrabble Madness—“Events like this are a chance for us to show our
best side – and to show that we, too, are community members who are committed to making it a better place
to live.”
This event is being sponsored by a grant from the Eldersburg Wal-Mart.
Kim Robinson, the community involvement coordinator, said that the Wal-Mart tries to sponsor all
different types of events that “benefit the community of Carroll County.”
“So many people love the game, we hope that friends, families, scout troops and classmates will form
teams and the competition will heat up,” said Jennifer Douglass, a member of the Literacy Council and one
of the event’s organizers.
There is a need for volunteers on the day of the event. A signup sheet is located in the English
Department Office on the second floor of Hill Hall. Come out and support your fellow classmates. Even the
Academic Affairs Office is sponsoring a team for the contest!
Registration forms are available at Carroll County Public Library branches, the Literacy Council (Carroll
Non Profit Center; 255 Clifton Blvd, Suite 314; Westminster, MD) and the Carroll Arts Center (91 W. Main
Street; Westminster). Forms are also available upon request.
